The Internet Governance Forum

It is held in Athens, from 30 October to 2 November, 2006.

The UN General Assembly, back in December 2001, endorsed the holding of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS). Two phases were scheduled.

The objective of the first phase was to develop and foster a clear statement of political will and take concrete steps to establish the foundations for an Information Society for all, reflecting all the different interests at stake.

The objective of the second phase was to put Plan of Action, decided during the first phase, into motion as well as to find solutions and reach agreements in the fields of Internet governance, financing mechanisms, and follow-up and implementation of the produced documents.

In a suite with the World Summit on the Information Society came the The Internet Governance Forum (IGF). Its main purpose will be to discuss a wide range of issues related to Internet Governance, and, where appropriate, to make recommendations to the international community. The working and function of the Forum will be multilateral, multi-stakeholder democratic and transparent.

So, here we talk about Internet Governance. Governance! It's in the name of it. Does the Internet need a Governance? Has ever been such a matter of a discussion, some sort of meditation, before concluding there's need for Governance? Or it's just the automated way of figuring out things, that led reflect? As much I could search, I found nothing about such a prior discourse!

This is why, to me, when it comes to an Internet Governance Forum, it doesn't even make sense, such a Forum.

Internet has been born free and grows up less and less controlable. It is not surprising to see governments trying to take control over the Internet. It has always been this way with every expression media.

However, I'm confident that the freedom of speech cannot be banned. For the simple reason that technology works for it. Open networks are coming really fast. New wireless technologies will connect people with each other, letting out the need to pass through traditional ISPs. We're heading towards underground uncontrollable networks. Helped by the emerging technologies.

And, since these technologies mean money for the Big Companies, to stop them, one should have to stop capitalism, first!

If I don't post here since quite long, is because the blogging tool I use for this blog (ecto), isn't updated for using the Blogger Beta.

Here's what the developer says:

There's a lot of stuff happening at Blogger side. They're switching to a new version of their blogging system with a new API. I don't know what they're doing to the old servers, but I'm getting a lot of error reports. All I can do is work on ecto3 so it is compatible with the new Blogger version. But again, I only have so much time I can spend on ecto3.

Till that time and the release of ecto3, this blog stays in the freezer. However, all my other blogs and sites are open. You can find some of them at the sidebar. Look for my latest posts, under the "Other Phivos' Posts" Header.

I'll be back here, as soon as Adriaan finishes working on the new version.

Photoshop can be a harmful tool!

It happens sometimes, I have to introduce Photoshop to people that have, almost never in their lives, touched a computer.

By the end of the first training day, they come up with some "retouched" photos, most of them showing cloned clouds or birds over skies, using the rubber stamp tool. All agree their masterpieces won't fool a child, pull their photos to the trashcan and leave the classroom loughing happily.

None of these photos has ever been as bad as this one!

But this one was manipulated by a professional photographer, trying to put a little more drama to the scene. I don't find shockin, what he did. Photographers show us their point of view, even if they manipulate their photos, in exactly the same way reporters have always transmit their point of view, manipulating their texts! We are conscious of that.

What I find shocking, is that the guy didn't see any problem in his photo! I'm sure he didn't see it. It is not possible to release such a photo, being concious of all the consequences - this is the end of a career - if one has previously seen this. The professional photographer's eye, just didn't see any trouble!

I won't come again with the good old days, where the reporters knew how to use their tools, etc. But, after the shutter priority, after the autofocus, after the intelligent light mettering, don't you think, dear photoreporter, you should put just a little bit of brains into your work?

Adobe should sue this guy for slandering Photoshop and its abilities!

Windows Vista Speech Recognition

The forthcoming Windows Vista OS (forthcoming, yes, indeed), is announced to support speech recognition! You know, that thing that you talk to the machine and the system recognizes your words and types the text on the screen!
Microsoft organized a demo, for this genius feature! Watch the video:

Isn't it amazing? Now, windows users will be able to get their texts into the machine 10 times slower than by typing! Wow!

Just to remind you, all Macs since 1992 can do this kind of work, perfectly, even in nin english languages. I, personally use this for years for creating my teaching documents in french!

Yes, you're right. Macs are more expensive! As all work-tools are!

Technorati gets a new face

A few minutes ago Tecnorati launched a new template for their site. It's true the old one was, to my taste, a little confusing.

The new style gives some more general interest services pulled out of the tag database, such as sports or tech.

There is much more personal info on the cover page, like your favorites or your first 3 blogs etc.

Is it better than the old one? Time will tell. I wish they have improved the reliability of the engine behind the scenes. As I have quite often mention, not all tags are scanned correctly, not all pings are heard, not all links are found!

However, Technorati still keeps the frond of the stage. And I like it!

Google to ban Greek language ads?

Greek AdWord advertisers aim greek public through their ads. It is obvious, the ads must be in greek language and published on greek language sites/blogs.

Google algorithms don't analyze correctly the utf-8 encoding, giving mostly japanese ads. Not of much help for all of us, on the ad field.

The workaround has been a line of javascript (unknown - to me - the author to credit). Not touching Google's code, just showing Google robots the way to the greek language, this script could be considered as a bug fix to Googles code.

Hundreds of webmasters implemented in their pages, this piece of code. And everything worked as supposed to.

All, till a few weeks ago. Suddenly, all of these sites noticed, Google stopped sending greek language ads, putting the usual generic interest - "not relevant ad found" - announcements.

The sites stopped receiving income, the advertisers lost their promoting tool and Google their commission!

To this moment, no official Google statement. We're all just investigating the fact, looking for possible causes of the trouble.

It is known that Google works on a new Greek Ad Unit in Dublin and that last week, they announced AdSense for search. A first step to the complete AdSense integration.

In the meanwhile, pennies fall on the ground!

Never touch your Blogger blog's title

Blogger names the permalinks of your posts after the title you give. That's good. What is no good, in the way they have implemented this feature is that the permalink is not permanent. That means, if you decide to change the title of your blog, Blogger changes the name of the permalink, too.

If you change the title right after the first publish, it wouldn't be of great harm. But if you change id some weeks, even months later, every incoming link to your posts, will be lost.

That's exactly what happened to a blogger I know. He went a little too fast, after someone challenged him and changed all the titles of his blog, adding ordering numbers to them. 300+ posts changed permalinks and have definitely lost their incoming links. And the blog all of its rankings.

Obviously, each post is considered as a new post, triggering all automated actions associated with, such as pinging servers!

No good dear Blogger, No good!

I'm bored of your stupidness!

It's been one year from the London underground bombing day. A few days ago.

I don't want to discuss this event, too serious a matter, to say anything about it in just a few lines.

What amazes me in times like this or like the 9-11 incident, is that there will always be some people, to describe how themselves or someone of their surrounding, escaped by almost nothing, from the disaster.

One of the classic schemes: "I woke up late that morning and I missed the fatal train! So, I'm here, alive and well to tell you this unique story!"

I'm really bored! Bored to death. Life keeps on because of a series of coincidences. Coincidence is life's greatest banality! Nothing can be somehow pre-decided!

If I manage to cross the street is because I moved myself at the right moment! A few milliseconds later, I should be run down by the passing bus. It's just a simple coincidence that all my internal mechanisms functioned correctly at this very moment and I finally arrived en face! Should I get interviewed for that by a TV Station?

Well, you woke up late enough to miss the train. But, it could be the next train to have the bomb! What would you tell your local TV ?

It's being some days now, some of my blogs are no more indexed by Technorati. As a matter-of-fact, Tecnorati won't even accept pings for these blogs. Whether they are given from a ping service or directly through a Tecnorati "ping now" button, the result is the same. Nothing!

What is really annoying is that I've built a feed upon a Technorati tag of mine, and this feed is now half-filled!

I'm searching the issue.

Easy to be ridiculous

There's a site, we'll call it site A, from Australia that claims to be an independent reporting site dealing with IT news and related questions.

Their latest first page, reviews the most dangerous software, you could have installed on your computer (by the term computer, they understand a PC running Windows). They give a list classified in order of vulnerability.

They didn't build the list themselves. They actually "borrowed" it from another site, we'll call it site B, a site from Cambridge, Mass., who identify themselves as "the first company to solve the problem of unwanted software". In other words, they sell one of the thousands of the so called solutions, for your Windows nightmares.

Employing the most sophisticated scientific methods, they specify that each application on the list is chosen up on the basis of the following characteristics:

is well-known in the consumer space and frequently downloaded by individuals;

is not classified as malicious software by enterprise IT organizations;

contains at least one critical vulnerability registered in the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) official vulnerability database;

has a severity rating of between 7.0 - 10.0 (high) on the CVSS scoring system;

relies on the end user, rather than a central administrator, to manually patch or upgrade the software to eliminate the vulnerability, if such a patch exists.

The reporting site, site A, is flooded, all by a coincidence, by huge Microsoft ad blocks, praising Microsoft made tools of Security. (Microsoft security tools to resolve Microsoft Windows security problems!). If you find your way, in this Ad land, you can see the famous list of dangerous software yourself.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Most Dangerous Never To Install Software is...

1. Mozilla Firefox 1.0.7

followed by:

2. Apple iTunes 6.02 & Quicktime 7.0.3
3. Skype Internet phone 1.4
4. Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.02, 6.03
5. Sun Java Run-Time Environment 5.0 Update 3, JRE 1.4.2_08

So, now you are warned! Never again this unwanted software on your machines! Only the good old safe and reliable soft, that came with your Windows PC!

As all of you, dear colleagues, I had my Day, today. For my year round endurance, I was granted with flowers, a heavy book, in which I had previously express a net interest and last but not least, a hand-made greeting-card!

It seems obvious that, if daddy is glued in-frond of the tube every other Sunday, he's a big fan of Schumacher! Not quite my baby, not quite! Although, it would be of great fun seeing him in a red Audi numbered 2 and 7! Maybe next year?

Thirty Years!

The fact that the last week, I posted almost nothing in any of my blogs/sites, is in a straight relation to the anniversary, I'm passing through.

Thirty years ago, it was the last days of May, I arrived in Paris. Thirty years later, that's a whole life, I have nothing to celebrate.

This was not the life I wanted to have lived. This was not the place I wanted to have stayed. This was not the people I wanted to have been among. This was not the purpose I wanted to have dreamed of. Finally, I've done it all the wrong way.

I'm just sad!

But ready to start all over!

Technorati crushes under it's own weight?

It's been several days now, I observed some serious irregularities on Technorati's behavior.

First, when scanning the site, sometimes you see your blog as updated some minutes ago, but on another page, the same blog looks as been updated days before! The tags show your last post on one page, three posts behind on some other. What is very bothering is that if you plan to use some of the Technorati's RSS feeds, say all posts tagged "moon", you don't get all latest post sent!

The most serious malfunction I found is the one that has started a few days ago. I send pings that Technorati completely ignores, some other times, it shows a blog as updated but the post won't show up in any query. And this whatever the ping method I use, be it a utility, an internet service, even Technorati's own ping trigger! That makes the RSS feed, a virtually unreliable service!

It's sure Technorati has grown up since the early days and keeps on proposing new services every day but I'm seriously wondering if the guys are planning to upgrade the machines backstage or Technorati is condemned to be crushed under it's own weight!

Immigrants might be dangerous

Lots of noise lately about this Immigration Law.

In the beginning, I didn't get very much, why all that hustle. I called George and asked him about.

Not only he explained me all, in a crystal-clear demonstration, he even mailed me a terrible photo showing how these monstrous immigrants can be harmful for the integrity of the country, if they're let to get involved into public works.

Just figure out, what could happen if a peaceful citizen, horrified faced this sign! I must say, I'm now more than convinced.

Sandvox a plausible alternative to iWeb?

Works heavily in progress in Karelia Software. Dan Wood and Terrence Talbot work overnight to finish the last lines of this already famous web site creation software.

Comparing to Apple's iWeb, which is part of the iLife 2006 suite ($79), Sandvox stands on a level above. An easy way to build little personal sites, of course without its little problems of youth, but highly promissing.

One of the most interesting features in Sandvox is Pagelets. Pagelets are tools that help you incorporate pieces of external material, such as your flickr photos or an RSS feed, directly and without any hassle, into your page. Have a look to this page I built, in just a few minutes.

The final price of this pleasant software isn't yet fixed by Karelia however, if you download a free Sandvox demo, you give me the opportunity to save some $, when I'll purchase my own copy! When a very good friend is suffering I can't stay still. But times come when my words may harm more than heal. It's then I don't show up. Not because I'm indifferent but because I care. You see, in such a moment, how to tell things like that?

Don't expect things to fall from the sky, they won't. Nobody's there to take care of you! All human misery and suffer rises from this terrible misbelief.

We build our lives alone, we sketch our future by ourselves, we sculpt our Cosmos by our own hands. What's good in a borrowed life?

There's no other way but learn to seek the happiness in our own achievements, learn to leave our sorrow behind. After all an Eagle flies high, that high no other creature can!

So, I choose to stay away of this "me too" parade. Let my absence be my humble contribution.

I didn't subscribe myself to the CSS Reboot site, I just built another design for my ever stand-by project of that famous Phivos Talks Music site, I plan to build and I never found the time to.

Well, this time there's no more excuses. I start and I'll keep up with this project. And, whatever it may finish to be!

So, Phivos Talks Music! Every music, of any age, of any style. Good music has been everywhere. Let's have a little fun! For the moment, there is nothing in it, just the home-page for the design and a few pieces of code needed! But soon, I'll fill it up. One of the most surprising searches, brought some reader to this blog!

The man (or woman, how can I know, after all) opens his browser, goes to Google and asks: "Ancient Synagogue in Diaspora on the island of Aegina".

Because it happened, some of the keywords to be in the page, this blog's January '06 archive page listed 9th on Google's answer page! The Phivos' News page contains about 15 posts of various subjects. None in relation to the reader's search. The keywords Google found, were spread all around the page. Did he find what he wanted? Of course not! Not easy to search the net!

Can you propose what the search could be to restrain the field of search only to words laying near to each other?

I just had this experience. Paging through one of my blogs, I found a mistyped word in one of the titles. What more natural than go and make the little correction?

Blogger saved this as a new file with a new title. Not that dramatic? Except that all links to this post, all search engine indexes are simply gone!

Rain and Tears… ♫

Just woke up. It seems I'll be of right to have a lovely Parisian "Singing in the Rain" day, once again. Gray, the color of this city. Inside, outside, everywhere!

Every morning, high on the sky, I see an Eagle. He appeared a few days ago. Since then, he comes, flies a few rounds and then, he goes away. I think he keeps an eye out for something.

Nature wanted the Eagle to be Strong, Brave, Fearless, Self-sufficient and Sharp-eyed. This one is all this. But I think, he is more, much more. He is the kind of Eagle you find only in some mythical places on Earth!

Not surprisingly, somehow I feel I have spoken to him. Maybe I don't know his language, maybe he's afraid of me. Eagles don't trust humans. But, something tells me there's some way to communicate with this majestic flying creature. I start leaving crumbs, all around. Too little to see? Not for an Eagle! I wonder if he'll come this morning…

Yes, he's been back. I wave him a sign. I shake my hands. "Don't be scared, dear Eagle! You can't be scared! Don't you see me? Can't you see me?"…

Gone! Sad! I go back in the gray. Maybe tomorrow. The rain starts again. Some drops. Strange! Wait a minute. Is this rain or tears?

Blogger robots, are you Nuts?

I was working on Blogger's panel, cleaning up the mess in a little blog of mine called Disneyland - Paris when all of a sudden… boom!

The Blogger robots came in action and judged my movements being suspiciously suspicious! And they banned me! Just like this!

It is not the first time. Some other of my blogs have been granted the same award in the past. The Greek Adventure last January, has being a victim of their zeal. I asked for an inspection and a few days later, things went back in order. Then came the Phivos' News turn to be suspected as a SPAM blog! But where the robots proved their real wisdom and superiority is when they hit Αθηναίοι του Πλανήτη. I could never imagine they understand greek!

What is funny is that, when you are banned, Technorati stops scanning your blog, not even accept pings from you! How do they do it?

Well here I am, once again in the blacklist! All I can do now is turn my thumbs waiting for the guys to unlock me out! Nice shot Blogger!

Google goes to Mars!

After covering our entire Earth, Google exports the Mapping Concept to planet Mars. The brand new service named Google Mars is online.

It's been reported that the project was greeted with a great enthusiasm, from the Martians. "A New Era for the approaching of our two People" declared the President of March, Ping Ding Cloak.

The first photos of the project have been public, late this evening. On this one, pins locate Starbucks Coffee and McDonalds.

A Women's Day?

It is almost 100 years (1909) today, this idea was born and the celebration is held. But still… I DON'T GET IT!

In my mind, having a day in the year, is not "a good occasion to" talk about woman's rights, to evoke the position of the woman in our society, to remind the (huge) problems she still faces in her life. EVERY DAY should be a good occasion! Every single day of the whole year!

Having one day in the year, means not having the other 364! Humiliating, isn't it?

The most hallucinating irony: next to some "Women's Day" related article, on a High Traffic Site, ads inviting you to offer her a special gift: A Kitchen Grinder!

Not surprisingly, Reese Witherspoon gets the Oscar!

A few weeks ago, maybe more, I sent up some lines about Walk The Line. I was amazed then, by the performance of Reese Witherspoon as Mrs Carter. I wrote:

"…the amazing cheerfulness emerging out of her acting, is of the kind that can resurrect the dead! During the whole movie, her face is a source of optimism!"

I wasn't surprised this night when I heard she won the Best Actress Oscar Award. A huge turn on her acting career. Congratulations!

She'll have just two weeks now, to prepare a tremendous 3D Birthday party! I'w sure Mr and Mrs Cash won't miss it!

A little site for the greek Mac User!

It's been some time now, I see some greek friends of mine, jumbled with their new Mac. I thought, for those who just came into the computer world, it mustn't be that easy! Put upon the newness of the matter, the fact that they have also to fight with greek within the machine and you get the image!

What's Up Technorati?

I passed by the Technorati site this morning, willing to claim a blog. Everything went fine till the moment that I tried to configure the blog, you know, description, keywords etc…

After the click on the configure button, I got a completely empty page. Completely white! Even the source code had nothing in!

After the first surprise gone, I suspected being some problem with the browser (Safari), which I had upgaded lately. Firefox gave the same results. I checked on Windows, using Firefox, even… you know, that "browser". Nothing!

Worse, all the other blogs in my account had the same behavior. Empty pages after the configure button!

Nothing in Technorati's site gave me an answer.

Do you know something about? Please let me know.

Walk The Line!

Well, released last November, it just arrived this week, to the little village I live, so tonight I went to the movies.

Forced by the omnipresent obligation, in the film making industry, of producing only commercially successful movies, this one axes a little too much, to my taste, on romance.

The Legend, was not built only on that!

Hopefully, the movie is rescued by the superb performances of Joaquin Phoenix (perfect on Johnny Cash's gestures) and Reese Witherspoon.

Especially for her I'd say that, the amazing cheerfulness emerging out of her acting, is of the kind that can resurrect the dead! During the whole movie, her face is a source of optimism! Hats Off, my lady!

I'm sure the real June Carter had that charisma, too. Don't forget, she managed to keep in peace an otherwise sad man for all those long years! And the fact that he disappeared some months only after her passing, just supports this point of view.

However, I expected to see in the movie, more of Cash's pro life, more of his musical achievments, more of his relations with other musicians. And I don't get the point of telling the Cash story just till '68! Except if there will be a II.

As a bottom line, this movie just Walks the Line!

It won't start. Finds no system - obvious.
It starts on an external disk.
In target mode, the host Mac sees nothing.
Tech Tool can't even sniff a molecule of the defunct.

There go, 3000+ photos, addresses, passwords and the whole schoolwork, a few months before graduation! Songs from iTunes Music Store supposed to be recoverable (it's time to see how easy really this is).

Why did't you say the Magic Word? BACKUP! It can happen any time!

Et voilà un petit en français!

Depuis un moment je me disais que je devrais lancer un petit site en français. Apres tout, je passe un bon moment de ma vie à Paris, j'aurais de trucs à raconter.

Alors, la décision est prise et, à l'occasion de la sortie se Sandvox que j'ai mis à l'œuvre, hier soir, je me suis lancé.

Pour l'instant, une petite page. Juste pour voir. Le reste est à venir. Simple, pas beaucoup de glin-glin, même pas de tags. Juste une petite entrée de commentaires par Haloscan (que j'ai pas encore francisée), pour que vous me laissiez vos idées.

Exit the Blacklist

As I described two days ago, the Blogger Robots hit again! They put my Αθηναίοι του Πλανήτη blog in the blacklist, suspected to be a Spam blog!

The human intervention was very rapid this time, a few hours later, it was whitelisted again! - Thank you guys!

And back was the pings to Technorati. Which gives the proof that Technorati is strongly attached to Blogger's analysis for listing blogs. The question remains (at least for me), by what tech they get linked to that Blogger's blacklist.

Has Every Blog To Suffer This?

Two of my blogs at Blogger had been locked in the past, by the Blogger robots, thinking they were Spam blogs. First was "The Greek Adventure" joined a few days later by "Phivos News".

I had to ask for a human review, to see them back on the surface. During that period (some 4 to 5 days), I couldn't post using an external tool (ecto), I couldn't ping either. For posting, I had to enter the Bogger Dashboard and pas the "human submission verification". And of course, I was excluded from the Blog Roulette.

Strangely, for the time this torture lasted, Technorati didn't accept any ping, even from their own page!

When at last, somebody saw my blogs, I got a mail confirming me the blogs were again whitelisted. I posted there to thank them.

At least, I learned some things about what to do and mostly, what not to do, in order to avoid being blacklisted! Or, so I thought, until…

…until this morning, when it started again! Another blog I keep at Blogger "Αθηναίοι του Πλανήτη", in greek language this one, got blacklisted by these terrible robots. Robots think my blog is a Spam blog. When I tried to post, I got this message:

Your post has been saved as a draft instead of published. You must go to Blogger.com to publish your post.
To prevent these errors in the future, request a review at: http://www.blogger.com/unlock-blog.g?blogID=…

While the Dashboard message was:

The Athenians of the Planet

Here's a new blog in Blogger. It's called "Αθηναίοι του Πλανήτη" - The Athenians of the Planet.

This blog is built for people hat have been born in Athens, Greece, but they don't live actually, there. Greeks that have grown with the greek language and the greek culture.

Athens, one of the most ancient cities, gave much to the History and Culture of the World. We, the expatriated Athenians, love Athens and we like to travel there, as often as possible. Accommodation during our staying there is essential. Hotels, rooms but also travel plans like airplane and boat tickets. Because Athens is surrounded by the bluest sea and the most beautiful islands, we like visiting all these resorts as well as the ancient greek monuments.

Information about restaurants and local tavernas is also important. Because the famous greek food, moussaka and ouzo, is only in Greece where one can taste the best!

Sandvox, an alternative to iWeb?

Now that iWeb, Apple's own web publishing software for the Mac, is out, you may find it nice but you may also find it quite frustrating, since it almost pushes you to get a dotMac account for publishing (publishing to another server, although it is possible, is not for Mr. Everybody).

You should check out Sandvox, the website builder for the Mac that is coming soon from Karelia Software. It is in public beta now, so you can try it out even though it's not ready to buy yet. (I'm encouraging people to sign up because it's a cool program, and because if you sign up, I'll get a discount when it's released. If you start referring people, you can get a discount too.) Technorati problem indexing blog

The pings are rejected, the tags won't give the blog, neither from Blogger, nor from Technorati pages. I deleted the blog in Technorati and claimed it again, this gave nothing. Where this stacks?

I'm investigating this behaviour. Even this post is sent for triggering reasons.

Adobe Lightroom - I started testing it
